Een van mijn eerste recensies op het altcountryforum.nl was een recensie over het album: Rodentia: the best of Dark Roots Music. Een aantal nummers van Ghosts zou op deze verzamelaar niet misstaan. Phantom of the Black Hills is een eenmansproject met als thuisbasis Los Angeles, California. Het door Ratchet Blade Records uitgebrachte album bevat elf nummers en is van het begin tot het einde een verontrustende, onheilspellende ervaring. Allereerst is daar de hoesfoto van de “ghost” met Stetson hoed en witte kap met uitgeknipte ooggaten. Verder de titels van nummers als: Confessions of a Barn Burner, I Wasn’t Born to Die Old en They Shoot Horse Don’t They. En uiteraard de muziek. Opvallend is het gebruik van geluidssamples naast traditionele instrument-en als banjo en fiddle. De geluidssamples bestaan uit flarden tekst, geluidseffecten en andere obscure geluiden. De zang klinkt soms overstuurd door geluidseffecten van een distortion- pedaal maar dit gaat niet ten kostenvan de verstaanbaarheid van de teksten. Dat zou jammer zijn want op het album Ghosts worden thema’s aangesneden uit ondermeerde roerige geschiedenis van het Wilde Westen. Zo is er het meeslepende, benauwende
Olive Oatman, een waargebeurd verhaal over een meisje wat op 14 jarige leeftijd door indianen wordt ontvoerd. Bandit Heart is een schreeuw van frustratie en oproep om vrijheid naar te streven. Deze roep om vrijheid komt ook terug op de albumhoes met de tekst: Dedicated to Freedom fighters everywhere. Nieuwsgierig geworden naar de man achter dit project waag ik er een mailtje aan. Al snel krijg ik antwoord, al wordenveel vragen niet beantwoord en blijft de geest van geheimzinnigheid overeind.Q: You’ve dedicated your album to freedom fighters everywhere, are you political orientated? A: No, political parties use the word freedom to further their agenda, we are for freedom, period. Phantom of the Black Hills levert met Ghosts een interessant project af.

Phantom- As soon as there's a tour we catch latch on to comes round we'll be out there.

Nlzn- So when you’re not burning barns what kinds of music do you listen to?
Phantom- Spade Cooley, Buck Owens, Faron Young, Misfits, Ministry.

Nlzn- What’s the process to creating your songs?
Phantom- Beef then banjo then bellowin'.

Nlzn- Looks like you’re interested in 1800's history. I can hear it in your music but does it roll over to other parts of your daily lives.
Phantom- Definitely, there's a great Old West newspaper out there called Chronicle of the Old West that's drippin' w/ that.

Nlzn- What album made you wanna play music?
Phantom- Elvis' Golden Records

Nlzn-There’s some fast ass talking going on in the song Confessions of a Barn Burner. Can you slow those words down for us here?
Phantom- It was done in a bit of a drunken trance, somethin about needin a match to get off.

Nlzn- Do you take offence to the similarities to Hank III? Or do you wear it as a badge of pride?
Phantom- Hank III's the man, no problemo there.

Nlzn- Where will Phantom of the Black Hills be in Ten Years?
Phantom- Surveyin a great expanse of burnt barns, robbed banks and drunken hellbillys.
